Unit 2: Creating Suspense

Image
TASK 1: Research Research Methods  For this project, I mainly used Google, Wikipedia, and Amazon to assist my research. These are all commonly used research methods, but they do have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to conducting research for a film.  Google is a powerful tool for quickly finding a wide range of information on a topic. It can be especially useful for finding general things such as potential filming locations and the weather forecast for the days that you wish to be filming. However, the vast amount of information available on Google can also make it difficult to find the most relevant and reliable sources.  Wikipedia is a good place to start when researching a topic, as it provides a general overview and background information. It can be a useful tool for understanding the historical context of the film you're making. For me, it mainly came in handy when researching topics related to Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', which was originally the ...

UFilms Trailer

Image
This was just a small task that I was given, but I don't think anything got done with it in the end. However, I'm still quite happy with what I did for this one. The idea was to create an updated trailer for UFilms, as any promotional pieces that currently exist are outdated. I feel like my take is a bit darker than the others, so it may not have been what UFilms were looking for, which therefore serves as an explanation as to why nothing came of this.  Making this involved hours of looking through all of UFilm's past projects, though I was most interested in using more recent posts. As it turns out, there were a lot of horror/thriller themes, which then went on to influence the overall tone of the final result. I also thought it was helpful to put film titles at the bottom of the screen, as I felt it would be more helpful when it came to people discovering these films. Even though the trailer may never be used, I'm still happy it gave me a chance to look through the ...

Copycat Scene

Image
For this project, we had to copy a scene from a movie. I was having a few problems in the group that I was initially in, which resulted in me moving to another group. The group that I had moved to had chosen a scene from 'Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)', where each member of the Avengers tries to lift Thor's hammer. I became the editor for this project, which came in very handy for the other filmmakers in the group, as none of them were confident in video editing.  My task as the editor involved me editing the shots together to look as close to the film as possible. I initially tried to copy it shot-for-shot (such as making shot lengths exactly the same as in the film). However, I soon realised this could not work, as our actors delivered their lines at different paces than in the film, and some shots were just missing. So, I improvised for a lot of it. Other parts of my task included a lot of research, such as researching the music used in the scene, to then use the same...

'Ghost Light Tour' Advert for the Stockton Globe

Image
This is a small ad for the Stockton Globe, which was meant to advertise their 'Ghost Light Tour' for Halloween. The group consisted of me, Kenz Day, Jack Harrison, Jack Herriot, & Daniel Balouch. I was the editor. We hired Jack Pavey as our main actor, and Kenz stepped in as a supporting role. The concept of the ad was based on the idea of an actor that is auditioning for a role in the 'Ghost Light Tour'.
